The end is finally here
By Lindsey
This was my least favorite of the scribes of Medeisia series.
The fourth book picks up right where the third left off, and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the grand finale. Unfortunately, City in Ruins fell way below my expectations.
There are no surprises. The good stay good, the bad stay bad, no guessing, no edge of your seat intrigue. Our favorite cast of characters seemed to take a back seat as Stone went on an individual adventure, and I sorely missed the dragon, the wolf, and the rebels. They were present but affected nothing. Stone, who has been such a star before, stumbled along straight into answers instead of having to figure things out herself.(It was like taking a test but finding the answer key) The puzzle pieces fit together a little to perfectly, making it seem as if the author was eager to be finished and just wrapped up with a nice little bow. I wanted grit and dirt and heartache, but instead I simply felt detached from this addition to the series. Everything that happened, any major move a character made had little to no impact on the plot whatsoever. This left me extremely disappointed.
I will say, I did still enjoy this book. I have loved Stone from the start and was completely entranced with Medeisia and am sorry to see it go. I enjoyed the ending the author provided, it was the perfect ending for this beautifully imperfect story. While I cannot say this book was my favorite I would highly recommend this series for anyone who isn't afraid of gods, men, and dragons.
3 out of 5 stars.

Wonderful Ending to the Series
By Katherine P.
City in Ruins by RK Ryals is the 4th book in the Scribes of Medeisia series. This series is an epic fantasy series filled with magic and dragons, evil kings and rebels, and friendship and love. I definitely recommend that you read the entire series, starting with book 1 - Mark of the Mage.
City in Ruins drew me back into the world of Medeisia and brought old friends back to me. Ms. Ryals is able to create such an amazing fantasy world with her words - she shows the readers Medeisia and makes it feel real. And the characters in this series are so realistic and relevant. Each character has flaws and strengths...no one is perfect.
I don't want to say a lot about the plot because the storylines of all 4 books are woven together so well and I don't want to give spoilers to anyone thinking about reading the series. But I will say that the plot is interesting and intense and the story has so many twists and turns. And the ending was perfect - it wasn't a happily ever after ending but it hints at the possibility of a happy ending for Stone and her friends. It gives the reader satisfaction but still allows you to think about the characters and wonder if it all really goes the way you want it to.
I highly recommend this book. I loved it!!

Absolutely brilliant entertainment, and a stunning conclusion
By Leah D
Oh God this story. I've been waiting for this story for what feels like forever. These characters are real, they're my friends. When they hurt, I FEEL it. They happiness, sorrow, pain..it's all consuming.

Book one pulls you in. Book 2 destroys you, repeatedly, into a million microscopic pieces. Book three is like bone regenerating... it gives you hope that you're able to piece all of those little pieces back together and end up being stronger in the process. But the problem is, while you rebuild, the feels just keep coming and you keep crumbling equally as often as you rebuild.

Then book 4. Oh dear lord this book. You want the impossible to happen, knowing it can't but hoping it will. It's an adventure unlike any other and it's all consuming. And boy was it worth the ride!!

BRAVO!!

Gives legitimacy to the study of American sports
By Matthew Gunia
First a word about the "Major Problems" line: it is designed to be a text in college history courses. Each chapter is divided into two parts: 1) Primary sources 2) Two or three scholarly articles (usually written by an expert in the field). Each source or article is designed to act as a springboard for classroom discussion lead by the professor. In all, I like the format of the line of books and enjoyed it when a professor assigned it as a text. I'm so nerdy, in fact, that I've bought a couple books from the "Major Problems" lines to read for pleasure. This particular title in the series was compiled by a former professor of mine, Steven Riess. He succeeds in putting together a series of documents that enlighten, challenge opinions and, in all, provide a wealth of information while leaving no clear cut answers. Favorites include essays on why sports were restricted in colonial New England (because of religions reasons or for practical/safety reasons?), the interview with Muhammad Ali, and Chapter 14: The Business of Sport (highlighting the benefits, drawbacks and inside deals involved in big money major leagues). Riess also succeeds in giving legitimacy to the study of sport--think of all the money spent on tickets, all the air time, advertisements, etc. that are involved in modern sports. Sports IS a major part of American society and Riess helps to present its rich history and evolution. This is a college text book--not something one would take to the park with them on a Sunday afternoon to read under a tree, but this was not Riess' intention. Clearly, he hit the mark he was aiming for.

Very good for young adult to learn about sport
By Amuhzon
An in-depth look into the psychology and sociology of sports throughout many decades of historical times. Learn from different researchers, the ways in which there is racial centrality in baseball, and premeditated stereotypes regarding football, take effect and helped shape the modern day era of sports we are living in today. Take a deep dive into the world of the 1920's-1950's, where segregation was a real and cruel world where sports was an outlet for the youth to take out their energy on.

About the Author
Mark F. Sanders has been a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis for 27 years. In that time, he has taught more than 120 genetics courses to more than 30,000 undergraduate students. Specializing in teaching the genetics course for which this book is written, Dr. Sanders also teaches a genetics laboratory course, an advanced human genetics course for biology majors, and a human heredity course for non-science majors.  His teaching experience also includes introductory biology, and courses in population genetics and evolution.

Dr. Sanders received his Bachelors degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Following graduation, he spent four years at the University of California, Berkeley as a post-doctoral researcher studying inherited susceptibility to human breast and ovarian cancer. At UC Berkeley he also taught his first genetics courses. Since coming to the University of California, Davis, Dr. Sanders has maintained a full-time teaching schedule and promotes academic achievement by undergraduate students in numerous ways, including as an active student advisor, through his on-going role as the director of a long-standing undergraduate student program, and by past service as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs in the College of Biological Sciences.

John L. Bowman is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of California, Davis in the US. He received a B.S. in Biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.  His Ph.D. research focused on how the identities floral organs are specified in Arabidopsis (described in Chapter 20).  He conducted postdoctoral research at Monash University on the regulation of floral development.  From 1996-2006 his laboratory at UC Davis focused on the developmental genetics of plant development, focusing on how leaves are patterned. From 2006-2011 he was a Federation Fellow at Monash University where his laboratory is studying land plant evolution using a developmental genetics approach.  At UC Davis he taught genetics, 'from Mendel to cancer', to undergraduate students, and continues to teach in genetics courses at Monash University.

Welcome to your nightmare
By Deleuze623
Someone commented that this is a gem for graduate level study--maybe it is. However, for an undergraduate survey course in genetics, this book is a mess that will leave you frustrated and perplexed without feeling like you've actually learned anything. Our professor made a deal with us: most of the exams will come from the back of chapter problems. Fair enough, I thought. However, I soon began to realize that the problems AND answers were so wordy and disorganized that what should have been a boon was just confusing me even more and leaving me directionless before an exam. Part of the problem is that this text is too detailed. Another huge problem is that the solutions manual is riddled with wrong answers. After the semester was already halfway over, our professor provided us with the errata for the solutions manual and it was disorganized and incomplete as well. For a class that could have been illuminating and genuinely great, this book single-handedly made it its mission to keep the class average below 50. What a piece of garbage. Correct and edit, please.

Avoid if you can
By B. Beyer
This book is utter garbage. I can't get through a chapter without having to check the internet for corrections and mistakes that are littered throughout this book. Not to mention the lack of proof reading in the end of chapter questions. This book made Genetics hell for me, and I despise that it was a required text. Maybe the editors should fix the problems instead of making new editions of this trash.

Avoid at all costs
By Mansour Zand
This is a terribly written textbook. It reads like an instruction manual, and takes two pages to get the idea or concept. My professor was repeatedly frustrated with the structure and formatting. I'm just baffled by how awful this book is!

The Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry, by Bryan Sykes

The national bestseller that reveals how we are descended from seven prehistoric women.

In 1994 Bryan Sykes was called in as an expert to examine the frozen remains of a man trapped in glacial ice in northern Italy for over 5000 years―the Ice Man. Sykes succeeded in extracting DNA from the Ice Man, but even more important, writes Science News?, was his "ability to directly link that DNA to Europeans living today." In this groundbreaking book, Sykes reveals how the identification of a particular strand of DNA that passes unbroken through the maternal line allows scientists to trace our genetic makeup all the way back to prehistoric times―to seven primeval women, the "seven daughters of Eve." illustrated and includes a map

From Publishers Weekly
"A traveler from an antique land... lives within us all," claims Sykes, a professor of genetics at Oxford. This unique traveler is mitochondrial DNA, and, as this provocative account illustrates, it can help scientists and archeologists piece together the history of the human race. Mitochondrial DNA is present in every cell in the body, and it remains virtually unchanged (aside from random mutations) as it passes from mother to daughter. By quantifying and analyzing the mutations of this relatively stable circle of DNA, Sykes has solved some of the hottest debates about human origins. For example, he clarified a long-running debate among anthropologists over the original inhabitants of the Cook Islands. After retrieving mitochondrial DNA samples from the island natives, Sykes concluded that the natives emigrated from Asia, not America, as many Western anthropologists had contended. In a similar manner, Sykes analyzed samples from native Europeans to determine that modern humans are not at all related to Neanderthals. The book's most complex and controversial find that the ancient European hunter-gatherers predominated over the farmers and not vice versa leads Sykes to another stunning conclusion: by chance, nearly all modern Europeans are descendants of one of seven "clan mothers" who lived at different times during the Ice Age. Drawing upon archeological and climatic records, Sykes spins seven informative and gracefully imagined tales of how these "daughters of Eve" eked out a living on the frozen plains. (July 9)Forecast: Sykes is a bit of a celebrity geneticist, as he was involved in identifying the remains of the last Romanovs. This fame, plus his startling conclusions augmented by a five-city tour should generate publicity and sales among science, archeology and genealogy buffs.

From Library Journal
Sykes (genetics, Oxford Univ.; editor, Human Inheritance: Genes, Language, and Evolution) is passionate about his work in decoding mitochondrial DNA and about using this knowledge to trace the path of human evolution. To lure readers into this specialized work, he relates personal and historical anecdotes, offering familiar ground from which to consider the science. A discussion of the history of genetics and descriptions of the early landmark work of Sykes and his associates culminate with his finding that 90 percent of modern Europeans are descendents of just seven women who lived 45,000 to 10,000 years ago. Brief biographies serve to place these "seven daughters" into historical context as understood by archaeology. This is an example of good popular science writing that makes difficult concepts accessible and relevant to the general reader. Recommended for public libraries. (Index not seen..

From Booklist
From Eve, the earliest known hominid, discovered in Africa, geneticist Sykes traces a genetic linkage to seven prehistoric European women. A gifted writer, he conveys the excitement and drama of his discovery of strands of DNA that passed unbroken through the maternal line. He names the seven women he found in that line and extrapolates probable lives for them, based on anthropological data, thereby bringing them to life. His particular quest began with examining the remains of a 5,000-year-old man found in Italy and proceeded amidst the competitive pressure of other scientists, professional tensions between colleagues, and his sense of the fun involved in making his discoveries. In the end, he can trace living Europeans from some of Eve's seven daughters. Sykes is keenly aware of the professional and human significance of scientific inquiry and discovery, as well as of the woeful history of the use of genetics by racist theories--awareness that adds to this exciting contribution to showing that all humans share a common ancestry. Top-notch scientific survey, with bizarre fictional chapters
By D. Cloyce Smith
The first 200 pages of this book exemplify the best of scientific journalism: the author describes a difficult subject matter clearly and succinctly for those who don`t know much about genetics, he presents each scientific investigation as if it were a detective story, and he conveys his excitement and enthusiasm for his work. Anyone who reads this book will come away with enough knowledge about mitochondrial DNA and prehistoric humans to understand today's headlines. Sykes explains how DNA testing identified the bodies of the Romanovs (laying to rest fanciful stories about how they survived the Russian Revolution), he rebuts Thor Heyerdahl's theories of migration, and he presents a convincing case that all humans of European ancestry are descended from seven women. (He also discusses the possible ancestries of non-Europeans, for which--so far--there is far less evidence.)
Given how compelling and fun the majority of the book is, nothing prepares the reader for what comes next: seven chapters containing fanciful and completely fictional reconstructions of each of the "daughters of Eve." Sykes admits he cannot even be sure of where or when each of these women may have lived, but he reconstructs little soap operas out of the nonexistent facts of their lives; these New Age-inspired outtakes from "Clan of the Cave Bear" do not succeed even as good fiction. "Xenia was born in the wind and snow of late spring." "This year Helena's father was going to try a spear-thrower and detachable point for the first time." "Velda had a strong artistic streak." "Tara had always been a fast runner and her father, fit though he was, was gaining on her slowly." (Tara even "invents" a boat.) He fabricates entire families and children, births and deaths, relationships and tragedies for each of these women, even though he knows for certain only that they each had two daughters. For the most part, I found these chapters embarrassing and unreadable.
If Sykes wanted to speculate for the reader where, when, and how each of these women lived, he certainly could have done so in a scientific framework and made it interesting. For example, he could have presented what we know from the archaeological record about their approximate eras and possible environs. (I would in particular like to know what evidence, if any, scientists have uncovered to imagine that prehistoric societies featured mostly monogamous relationships, which figure prominently in Sykes`s stories.)
Fortunately, Sykes turns his attention back to the science in the last two chapters. Overall, except for the fictional chapters, this is a first-rate survey. I do wish, however, that the author had added a bibliographical essay or general notes, both to support his arguments and to suggest where readers might turn, now that he's managed to enlighten us on the subject.

So Who is your G. G. G. Grandmother?
By Terry
Information about the Mother line of the 7 women who entered Europe at different times and became the Clan Mothers of Europe. Easy to read the author personalized the DNA lines by giving them Names and placing them when & where they estimate they begin there migrations into Europe.
What Seven Mother's accomplished.

An easy to read genetics book!
By Stefanie
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was a total surprise. If you had told me a few weeks ago that I would be devouring a book about mitochondrial DNA and its role in tracing human evolution, I would have laughed. But this book is extremely easy to read. Sykes' narrative style, which includes a discussion of the complicated science of genetics but framed in stories of how he has used science to solve mysteries, makes it very easy to follow what he's saying and to actually learn about this exciting area of science.

I loved the research projects he discussed in the first part of the book, including testing the Romanovs and exploring the origins of native Polynesians. I agree with a friend of mine who also read this and thought that the book is actually *less* interesting when he gets into the hypothetical biographies of the Seven Daughters themselves.

But overall, I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. It even came in handy as I was at a discussion group focusing on the topic of intelligent design, and I was able to speak intelligently about what I'd learned about human evolution through Sykes and his research.

PREFACE BY PETER S. BEAGLE
ILLUSTRATED BY GEORGE BARR

"Although the wombat is real and the dragon is not, nobody knows what a wombat looks like and everyone knows what a dragon looks like."

Not a novel, not a book of short stories, Adventures in Unhistory is a book of the fantastic--a compendium of magisterial examinations of Mermaids, Mandrakes, and Mammoths; Dragons, Werewolves, and Unicorns; the Phoenix and the Roc; about places such as Sicily, Siberia, and the Moon; about heroic, sinister, and legendary persons such as Sindbad, and Aleister Crowley, and Prester John; and--revealed at last--the Secret of Hyperborea.

The facts are here, the foundations behind rumors, legends, and the imaginations of generations of tale-spinners. But far from being dry recitals, these meditations, or lectures, or deadpan prose performances are as lively, as crazily inventive, as witty as the best fiction of the author, a writer praised by Gardner Dozois as "one of the great short story writers of our times."

Who, on the subject of Dragons, could write coldly, dispassionately, guided only by logic? Certainly not Avram Davidson. Certain facts, these facts, deserve more than recitation; they deserve flourish, verve, gusto, style--the late, great Avram Davidson's unique voice. That prose which, in the words of Peter S. Beagle's Preface to this volume, "cries out to be read aloud."

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This collection of short essays is a real treasure. Davidson explains the origins of 15 myths, including werewolves, dragons, mermaids, unicorns, where Sinbad actually sailed, and the phoenix. He agrees with Kipling, whom he quotes as noting: "There are nine and sixty ways/Of constructing tribal lays/And every single one of them is right!" Kipling is just one of the many authors, historians, and philosophers to whom the well-read and eclectic Davidson turns to support the suppositions he himself posits about the "true" origins of each myth. He sometimes pits classic explainers against one another, as in the essay explaining the root of lycanthropy: one could find it in "Bulfinch's Mythology, but Rabelais is more fun." Each aside and every digression offer another path to follow or connection to make. The author's narrative prose itself invites sharing aloud, serving as a great model for student writers. Not only is this a wonderful resource for information on myths and legends, but it also comes with the bonuses of real literary adventures and some of the most entertaining nonfiction writing in the realm of popular culture.—Dana Cobern-Kullman, Luther Burbank Middle School, Burbank, CA

Review
"A king's ransom of short fiction from one of America's least-known masters of the form…These stories are as important and vital as those by Updike and Cheever."
--Des Moines Register on The Avram Davidson Treasury

"Not merely a treasury, it's a genuine treasure. Some of its pages will carry you away to strange seas and shores, others will show you the marvellous within the seemingly ordinary, and just about all of them will take your breath away. But that's what magicians do."
--The Washington Post Book World on The Avram Davidson Treasury

Outstanding Author; Great Book
By Amazon Customer
Avram Davidson is one of the greatest authors of 20th century American literature. Unfortunately,he chose eccentric and estoric subject matter, and is largely unrecognized. This is another of his quirky, fascinating books. Davidson is very learned, and in this book pulls together a fascinating range of facts. His prose is delightful. I'ts a highly enjoyable voyage through some of the stranger backwaters of legend and mythology.

An Inquiry into the Roots of Avram Davidson's Work.
By Jim Palmer
It's a pity that Avram Davidson early on got pigeonholed as a writer of science fiction and fantasy, because this designation consigned his work to pulp magazines--thus ensuring that one of the most brilliant stylists of the 20th century (I'll put The Redward Edward Papers up against a legion of James Joyce knockoffs any day) would never, ever get either the attention or the respect he deserved. In this, his last book--and only book of nonfiction, so far as I know--Davidson sits back, lights his pipe, and starts wondering. He brings a lifetime of voracious and eclectic reading, his encyclopedic knowledge of the esoteric, to bear on the roots of old stories and the creatures that populate them. Whence the dragon, whence the mermaid, where did Sindbad actually go?

But not only is this book a glimpse into (maybe) the genuine origins of old myths, it's also a glimpse into Davidson's brain itself. This is what he wondered about, this is what interested him, this is what he was reading about. This is the stuff that inspired his own work--the raw material of his corpus of stories and novels. And this is how his mind worked, and what a mind it was. He was able to sift between the vast amounts of information in his head to marshall his arguments and assemble his theories, and to do so lucidly, cleverly, and chattily.

Some readers will be put off by the style of this last book, which may strike them as overly conversationally erudite bordering on the precious. Others will appreciate it immensely. And others, like myself, will sigh in regret that we never actually got to meet the man and hear him expounding on every topic under the sun in person. Luckily, though, "Adventures in Unhistory" gets us pretty close to that.

Finally, an affordable edition of this masterpiece!
By Xtopher Xtopher
I am so thrilled to see some of Avram Davidson's work coming back into print! I sincerely hope that this author finds new readers thanks to the work of publishers like this one keeping his work alive. I first stumbled upon a story of his in an anthology (from the '70's), and his story stood out as the most creative and intriguing piece in the book. Since then, I've sought out and found his stories in many anthologies dating from the 60's to hisdeath in the early 90's, as well as several of his novels, and incredible story collections. Although he has written some masterful novels such as 'Phoenix and the Mirror', I prefer his style in the short form. He has a unique imagination and an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure history, world literature, & mythology, all on full display in this wonderful book.

This is a fascinating collection of essays and quasi-historical entries, assembled in a somewhat encyclopedic format, a reference book for bizarre literature. It chronicles the missing parts of history, the strange bits that should have happened. There are entries and essays about mysterious and fantastic creatures, mythical lands, bizarre psudo-scientific discoveries, and other rather dubious information about a broad variety of obscure subjects. I think this particular book reads a bit like the labyrynthine works of Borges if he had written while on hallucinogens... This book may have inspired the form of the recent 'Thackerey T. Lambshead pocket guide to ... diseases,' or at least I feel that these two books go together well. Davidson is an absolutely unique talent, but I think this book should appeal to fans of Jeff VanderMeer and the Leviathan anthologies, Kelly Link, Neil Gaiman (who has mentioned his admiration for Davidson), Jeffrey Ford, Gene Wolfe, & R. A. Lafferty (another slightly obscure writer whose oddball work I love).

I have been hoping for years for a publisher to re-print this book so I could round out my Davidson collection. 'Adventures in Unhistory' was originally released in 1993, only in a limited collector's edition, which has gone on to become this author's most sought-after work, selling for many hundreds of dollars when it rarely does exchange hands... It has obtained a some-what legendary status, particularly among other authors of speculative fiction who occasionally cite it as a reference or influence, or just let slip in interviews that they own a coveted copy. An essay from this book inspired the idea behind Vonda MacIntyre's novel 'The Sun and the Moon.' Peter Beagle (who introduces this edition) has listed this as a favorite book, and Neil Gaiman has mentioned it on his blog. The original publisher, Owlswick, published a companion volume, 'The Adventures of Dr. Esztehazy,' which also first came out in a limited edition, as well as a cheaper HC edition, also illustrated by George Barr. I highly recommend seeking out this companion book as well, if you like this volume.

If this happens to be your first exposure to Davidson's work, and you want more (you will), or you are looking for a more general introduction to his writing, I highly recommend the 'Avram Davidson Treasury', which is a generous collection of stories from every period and genre which he worked in, including work from this volume, with appreciative essays by the greats of speculative (fantasy) fiction. That collection provides a great overview of his short work. I recommend these great story collections to any reader interested in imaginative fiction.

So, in case I wasn't clear: buy this book!

Also mentioned in this review, and worth seeking out:

'The Adventures of Dr. Eszterhazy' Avram Davidson, Owlswick press, HC

'The Avram Davidson Treasury' Grania Davis, Orb, PB

'Pheonix & the Mirror' novel, Avram Davidson

'The Thackery T. Lambshead Guide to Eccentric and Discredited Diseases, 83rd Edition' Jeff Vandermeer, et al., collection

almost any story collection by R.A. Lafferty

Automotive Engine Alternatives, by Robert L. Evans

This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Alternative and Advanced Automotive Engines, held in Vancouver, B.C., on August 11 and 12, 1986. The symposium was sponsored by EXPO 86 and The University of British Columbia, and was part of the specialized periods program of EXPO 86, the 1986 world's fair held in Vancouver. Some 80 attendees were drawn from 11 countries, representing the academic, auto motive and large engine communities. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a critical review of the major alternatives to the internal combustion engine. The scope of the symposium was limited to consideration of combustion engines, so that electric power, for example, was not considered. This was not a reflec tion on the possible contribution which electric propulsion may make in the future, but rather an attempt to focus the proceedings more sharply than if all possible propulsion systems had been considered. In this way all of the contributors were able to participate in the sometimes lively discussion sessions following the presentation of each paper.

I have ms and I have an almost 6 yr old who is showing signs of being effected by it even though I do everything I can do shield her from it she still is aware. The book was simple and didn't scare her - we often repeat a page - when mommy isn't feeling well what does the giraffe do? Rest mommy now go take a nap.
