A Road Map to a Poetic Life
By Jaycel Adkins
Written with a simple, elegant, and com(passionate) prose, Rainer Maria Rilke pens a series of letters to a young aspiring poet, Franz Xaver Kappus that contain a stunningly beautiful argument and plea for living an authentic life, that addresses the silent questions that exist in the deepest chambers of our hearts, the grand themes of literature, and hence life: the meaning of solitude and how to love.
The first letter gives the greatest advice anyone can give to someone aspiring to be anything. You have to ask yourself the following question: "must I?" If you answer in the affirmative, then "build your life in accordance with this necessity; your whole life, even into it's humblest and most indifferent hour, must become a sign and witness to this impulse." That you must only judge Art by the following value, has it arisen out of necessity?
The second letter, he warns against the role of irony running through your life and one must guard against it by searching "into the depths of Things: there irony never descends."
The third letter argues that one must always trust in yourself and your own feelings. Do not fall victim to convention. Which is nothing more than unwillingness on each of our parts to not fully engage life, but rather to take what others have said and done as well-traveled roads to walk through life upon. For the person living a poetic life, "everything is gestation and then birthing. To let each impression and each embryo of a feeling come to completion, entirely in itself, in the dark, in the unsayable...and with deep humility and patience to wait for the hour when a new clarity is born: this alone is what it means to live as an artist: in understanding as in creating."
The fourth letter argues for one to trust in Nature. We all must learn how to "win the confidence of what seem poor." A fundamental change in our mindset must occur in our hearts, a shift from convention to authenticity. We have "to love the questions themselves, as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language." The incredible thirst for quick and easy answers to life's most difficult questions must end. We have to take in the questions, which are really emotions or feelings without names into our bloodstreams. To "live the questions." He goes on to expand upon our relations to sex. "Sex is difficult." We all have to create out of each of our own unique lives an individual relation to sex and hence to our lovers, without carrying the luggage that society and convention loads us down with, then you will approach being a human being. Sex has to become more than a stimulant or balm to cover a more fundamental ache in our spirits. We should be stewards of our own "fruitfulness" to "gather sweetness , depth, and strength for the song of some future poet." (DO YOU DO THAT INBETWEEN THE SHEETS! )
The sixth letter concerns the notion of "solitude." We all create a "vast inner solitude." To walk inside yourself for hours without meeting anyone, that is what you must be able to attain. Through this you gain a child-like perspective, a great "wise not-understanding in exchange for defensiveness and scorn (of adults)." It is within the vast ocean of your solitude that we can truly approach and understand the dimensions of divinity that exists. How do you confront God? By being "patient and without bitterness, and realize that the least we can do is make coming into existence no more difficult for Him than the earth does for spring when it wants to come."
The entire series of letters find its zenith in the seventh letter in which Rilke takes the notion of Solitude and marries it with Love. He argues that yes "love is difficult." But that we must put our trust "in what is difficult as Nature does, to exercise our beings to their fullness." The act of Loving another human being is the "most difficult task...for which all other work is mere preparation." Each of us must "learn" how to love. To know that it springs from our oceans of solitude not from a formless merging of ourselves to another. But rather that each of us must "ripen" into individuals that can experience and give love, "to hearken and hammer day and night." To Love is to accept a "burden and apprenticeship" that allows each authentic person to grow and become rather than fall back and lose what makes them unique and rare. The ultimate aim of life is "the love that consists in this: that two solitudes protect and border and greet each other."
The seventh letter deals with the meaning and confronting of sadness. Rather than running away or fearing sadness, Rilke argues that it is something that must be embraced as an opportunity. These are the moments when something new is entering us "our feelings grow mute in shy embarrasment, everything in us withdraws, a silence arises, and the new experience, which no one knows, stands in the midst of it all and says nothing." In the face of this sadnessthe only courage required is to "face the strangest, most unusual, most inexplicable experiences that meet us." Not to run and cower before the immensity of those feelings and experiences, but to recognize them for what they are, an opportunity to blossom.
The ninth letter argues that we must trust our feelings. But only those feelings that uplift us entire, not by portion. Feelings that raise only a part of us, distort us.
The final letter argues for this poetic life. For Rilke, "Art too is a way of living, and however one lives, one can, without knowing, prepare for it."
These ten letters show you how.

Mitchell's translation of Rilke
By Neil W. Smith
I find Stephen Mitchell's translation far superior to that if The New World Library. Compare this passage:

"Perhaps all dragons in our lives are really princesses just waiting to see us just once being beautiful and courageous."(NWL)

"Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are really princesses waiting for us to act, just once, with beauty and courage."(SM)

I only wish Miller's were as beautifully hard bound as NWL's.

For the Artist
By A Customer
This book first came to my attention when a good friend of mine sent me a quote from it, which has since become my life quote ("Be patient toward everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves..Do not search for the answers which could not be given to you now because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything...Live the questions now")
Since I heard this quote, I tracked down a copy of the book after searching a half dozen bookstores and libraries, and it was worth every minute of work to find it. This book has been put on the highest level of appreciation in my mind, up there with Richard Bach's 'Illusion' and 'One'; my two other favorite books. Rilke's book was written for the artist; the person who wants to live life to its fullest and explore both the inner and outer world and their connections.
Although, as another reviewer said, this book will not be fully appreciated by all readers, it is a must read for everyone, especially those who appreciate spirituality, art and living.

The Transgender Studies Reader 2From Routledge

Over the past twenty years, transgender studies has emerged as a vibrant field of interdisciplinary scholarship. In 2006, Routledge’s The Transgender Studies Reader brought together the first definitive collection of the field. Since its publication, the field has seen an explosion of new work that has expanded the boundaries of inquiry in many directions. The Transgender Studies Reader 2 gathers these disparate strands of scholarship, and collects them into a format that makes sense for teaching and research.

Complementing the first volume, rather than competing with it, The Transgender Studies Reader 2 consists of fifty articles, with a general introduction by the editors, explanatory head notes for each essay, and bibliographical suggestions for further research. Unlike the first volume, which was historically based, tracing the lineage of the field, this volume focuses on recent work and emerging trends. To keep pace with this rapidly changing area, the second reader has a companion website, with images, links to blogs, video, and other material to help supplement the book.

A great follow-up to the Transgender Studies Reader 1
By NewYorkElf
An important compendium of some of the newer areas of the field of transgender studies. The Transgender Studies Readers are an important academic contribution since they make a range of important and often hard to get texts available to scholars, students, and all who rely on the information contained in this compact reader in their work and lives. This second Reader is an important follow up and focuses on the latest developments in the continually expanding and diversifying field of transgender studies which is increasingly interacting not only with feminism, but also critical whiteness, post colonialism, crip studies, animal studies, and many more.

Man Ray, by Guido Comis, Marco Franciolli

An exciting monograph dedicated to an extraordinary figure and one of last century’s most famous and influential artists. Man Ray (1890-1976) was a photographer, painter, and creator of objects, experimental films, and images which were at times enigmatic. This catalog, which presents more than 200 works and compares and contrasts images with biographical details, is divided into three main sections: Man Ray’s formative years spent between New York and an artists’ colony in Ridgefield, New Jersey; the Paris period; and the period spent between Hollywood and Paris, France-the city he ultimately chose to adopt as his home.
The publication describes the creation of some of his most famous pieces and the motifs-very often of females-that inspired the works. Man Ray’s life was marked by a succession of love affairs with famous and intriguing women, and this catalog dedicates several sections to this topic.
The book also deals with the themes permeating Man Ray’s work throughout the years, such as his passion for chess, the relationship between reality and illusion, and experimental photography and film. Comparisons are also made with the works of some of the most important artists of the twentieth century, such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Constantin Brancusi, Jean Arp, and Francis Picabia.

Not Gourmet, but Definitely Satisfying
By Colorgirl
When I first looked into RAW FOODS recipe books, I was quite turned off. It is not that I was not interested in eating raw food, but it was the unrealistic time involved just to make a meager meal, not worthy to fill up four hungry people like I have in my family.
I looked through several popular raw foods books in the library and ended up not buying them. Too much work for too little result.
When I got a copy of this book RECIPES FOR LIFE:FROM GOD'S GARDEN, by RHONDA MALKMUS, I was wary at first. After seeing the odd and sparse account of the "Hallelujah Diet" on their web site, I was not sure they could even make a book of recipes! I also must say that George Malkmus always looked emaciated to me and that made me not want to explore the diet either.
However, the recipes in the book are the best raw recipes I have seen so far. They are not overly fancy, but they are usually very good tasting. Quickly prepared, I find that many of the recipes make eating raw foods much more attainable.
There are lots of cooked food recipes in this book. Also some unrealistic recipes that I will never make (bread that dehydrates for days). Each recipe is rated by stars, 5 being the most ideal and less being less ideal.
I also appreciate the information included in this book. Having studied the field of health and nutrition for over two decades, I find that the information in this book is one of the only places I have seen what I have found valuable in my research compiled mostly in one place. It is great to answer the questions of "why" people eat or avoid certain foods or preparation methods.
For that reason alone, I recommend this book. The recipes I can and have used are plenty and quick to do. Blender, processor, and juicers are necessary, but that is usually the case with raw foods.
The spiral binding is also wonderful on this book. If I could only get one book nutritionally and about raw foods, this would win hands down. When I eat recipes used from this book, my entire family feels better and acts better too.
As for emaciated- I have since met other people on the diet who are weight lifters, older people retirement age, and athletes- all of who use this book and are far from emaciated. Fit and trim, yes, but not emaciated.
I am a gourmet cook with a drive to create interesting and artistic meals. This book does not disappoint me in the flavor department. It is not bland or boring, but neither is it artistic and dynamic. Great for that dinner hour when I can not think, do not want to think, yet want to make raw healthy food for the family and know they will eat it. In a few days, I can think again and embark on a gourmet meal of another vegan sort....

This and "God's Way to Ultimate Health", started it all for me around January. A good friend recommended this author after she beat breast cancer by changing her diet! I knew then I had to understand the link between diet and health. I wasn't satisfied to read just this book but many of the others listed in the bibliography and others on biological medicine and others relating to the acid/alkaline balance within our bodies. I've been able to help my mother gain control of her arthritis and hopefully get her off methotrexate for good. I've been able to help my mother in law lower her cholesterol since prior strokes have made this an issue. And my wife and I have lost the weight we couldn't seem to shake and have been able to improve all aspects of our health and physical well being. If you have any loved ones who's quality of life you want help improve this book is a great start.

Hallelujah - I can do this!

Most vegetarian books are filled with odd recipes and with odder still ingredients. This book has absolutely fantastic recipes - delicious, nutritious and HEALTHY. Ingredients are readily available at the local grocery or at the Health Food Store. I wish I had grown up eating this way instead of waiting until I am 60! My husband and I both are thrilled with the recipes in this book.

The New York Times bestselling author of What She Knew returns with an electrifying new novel about how the past will always find us...

"Literary suspense at its finest.”—Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Baby

“A wonderfully addictive book with virtuoso plotting and characters - for anyone who loved Girl on the Train, it’s a must read.”
   — Rosamund Lupton

Zoe Maisey is a seventeen-year-old musical prodigy with a genius IQ. Three years ago, she was involved in a tragic incident that left three classmates dead. She served her time, and now her mother, Maria, is resolved to keep that devastating fact tucked far away from their new beginning, hiding the past even from her new husband and demanding Zoe do the same.

Tonight Zoe is giving a recital that Maria has been planning for months. It needs to be the performance of her life. But instead, by the end of the evening, Maria is dead.

In the aftermath, everyone—police, family, Zoe’s former solicitor, and Zoe herself—tries to piece together what happened. But as Zoe knows all too well, the truth is rarely straightforward, and the closer we are to someone, the less we may see.

SECOND CHANCES
By Laurel-Rain Snow
At fourteen, Zoe Guerin, a musical prodigy, was bullied by the kids at the school she attended as a scholarship student. In an attempt to fit in, she reacts to a dare and takes the driver’s seat after a party. An accident, with Zoe driving, led to the deaths of her three teenage passengers.

Now, three years later, she is performing in a new venue, trying to thrive in her Second Chance Life, with her mother Maria and stepfather, a step-brother Lucas, and a baby sister Grace. Chris, her stepfather, does not know about Zoe’s life in Devon. In the new life in Bristol, with her new name, Zoe Maisey, she has another chance.

But somehow, secrets always have a way of getting out, and something happens that night during the performance that will bring Zoe’s secrets to light. And before the night is over, her mother will be dead.

The Perfect Girl was a multi-layered tale of the various secrets, lies, and hidden moments that make up the lives of the characters. Multiple narrators show us each character’s particular view on events, including some of what actually happened to cause Zoe to crash that car. Why did her blood alcohol test high when she didn’t recall drinking anything? And how did the testimony of the bullies seal her fate?

Most of the characters had flaws and some were quite unlikeable. I felt more sympathetic toward Zoe, but just when I wanted to root for her, she would do something questionable, or her mind would follow some pathway that would make me doubt her. In the end, a decision she makes changes everything; can something wrong make a right?

I definitely disliked Chris, with his attitudes, his cold eyes, and the mean words he shouted. How did a script written by his genius son Lucas convey something meaningful, that Zoe would read and come to use to help make a decision? What would be the significance of Zoe’s conclusions about the script in light of what happened to her mother?

Other characters, like Tessa, Maria’s sister; her husband Richard, with his alcohol problems; and Sam, the solicitor who helped Zoe with her case…all added something to the story, making it impossible to put down. A book that made me think about family dynamics and the issues that can lead to wrong choices, and what must happen to turn things right again. 5 stars.

A gripping story of murder, love, loss, and twisted justice
By Patto
Zoe Guerin is fourteen and already a gifted pianist. This cuts no ice, though, with the popular kids at the upscale school she’s attending on scholarship. Her attempts to party with the in-crowd result in a horrific accident that leaves three teenagers dead. Zoe is incarcerated for eighteenth months.

When the story opens, Zoe is living in a McMansion with her mother, stepfather and two stepsiblings. A wonderful second-chance life is beginning. Everything is perfect, from the décor to the decorum of the family. But there are betrayals brewing, secrets waiting to erupt, acts of violence in store. This is a very tense novel, but I found the tension compelling rather than unbearable.

The characters are well done. The adults are all dealing with their own problems (alcoholism, depression, illness, infidelity), while Zoe and her step-brother face down their devils.

Zoe, with her intelligence and essential goodness is both a catalyst for disaster and the saving of them all.

I especially enjoyed the ironic bent of the plot and the surprising turns justice takes. I’m tempted to read more by Gilly Macmillan. I would certainly recommend this book to readers who like sophisticated thrillers.

The defendant becomes the judge in The Perfect Girl
By H. Erickson
THIS. This book is my sort of book. Maybe it will be yours too? Or maybe not. I'll try and help you find out. The Perfect Girl is a steadily paced, family drama sort of novel set in the UK and has a soapy style that, to me, was juuuust right for the tone of the story. I'll explain that later. I had a hard time putting it down!

The Perfect Girl is a story that takes place over just 24 hours (or less) and told from the point of view of several characters (not always well done, but I liked it here). But it mostly centers around Zoe, a teenage musical prodigy with a criminal past that haunts her. I will not post any major spoilers! I promise. At the start of the book, we find Zoe just about to perform for the first time in her "Second Chance Life" alongside her new stepbrother, who is also a skilled musician. By the end of the first chapter, however, you learn that Zoe's mother doesn't survive the evening. And so off you go into the literary adventure that is discovering what happens to mom and why. Quite a story unfolds!

I say it's a bit soapy, in a good way, in that this book has it all: murder, criminal pasts, tragic diagnoses, affairs, addictions, and teenage angst. That said, I've never actually watched soap operas because I can't take them seriously with all that bad acting and lighting, but have enjoyed movies and shows called "prime time soap operas" such as Desperate Housewives or the more serious, Secrets and Lies. This book carried that sort of dark tone. I loved it. But I mention this aspect because I know not everyone does love this style. Stick to your laborious Tana French reads, if that's the case! I need a story that moves.

The interesting thing about this book, is how Zoe goes from defendant in the beginning to play judge by the end. You'll understand that, when you read it, because she was deprived of real justice once, and left unfairly unforgiven. In the end, she gets a unique chance to give justice and forgiveness that she doesn't believe the system is capable of. I wouldn't say the twists are totally shocking, but the finer details thereof are. See, throughout the book you do get glimpses of each character's meaningful past. For Zoe, her criminal conviction for killing her "friends" is a big part of the story. It haunts her, and she is caught in a frustrating position because of it. She had to face many months in "the Unit" (which, for non-British friends, sounds like the equivalent of the U.S. version of the juvenile delinquent center), and her account of what happened on the night she got her friends killed is not only upsetting because she was bullied by said friends, but also something sinister lurks in just one line that could go unnoticed by a speed reader. (Something about a drink tasting funny.) The reader is led to believe Zoe didn't deserve her conviction and reputation as a killer. She has obvious inner turmoil, which is not allowed to be addressed because her mother has since divorced Zoe's dad and remarried Chris. Chris needs Zoe's mom, Maria, to be the picture of perfection at all times. He is wealthy and refined, and will accept nothing less from his family. And so he doesn't exactly know about Zoe's past, nor does Zoe's new stepbrother. Not yet.

Or does he? Something dark unfolds throughout the novel as Lucas (the stepbrother) reveals something from his past to Zoe and her mother through a script he's written and emailed them. Lucas, you see, is not interested in music at all, but film making. But daddy doesn't like it. Without giving anything away, I'll just say...there could possibly be a second reason why Maria and Chris insist that Lucas and Zoe sleep with their iPods playing the classical music other than memorizing the piece for performances. What else do the parents not want the kids to hear at night? This book was cleverly written, and all the characters had a unique purpose and distinct profile. I will definitely read this author's work again. Each chapter was brief and to-the-point, which I very much appreciate more than books with lots of fluff and overly indulgent details. Each narrator was relatable in their own way. I felt like an observer of the story itself.

So the story of that night in which Maria ends up dead unfolds through the eyes of Zoe, her aunt Tessa, Lucas's script, Tessa's husband, and Sam who was Zoe's solicitor (defense attorney) in the past. They are forced from their vision of family perfection into "the system" which Zoe has very good reason not to trust. So in the end, the defendant becomes the judge and I rather enjoyed the ride.

I think you would like this book if you also enjoyed other dark secrets novels set in the UK such as, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins or Until You're Mine by Samantha Hayes.

What time is it? Adventure Time™! Explore the magical world of Ooo with Jake the Dog and Finn the Human, along with the Ice King, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline the Vampire Queen, and all your favorite Adventure Time characters, in this New York Times bestselling companion book to Cartoon Network’s hit animated series.

Written and compiled by the Lord of Evil himself, The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia matches the playful, subversive tone of the television series, detailing everything anyone will ever need to know about the postapocalyptic land of Ooo and its inhabitants—secret lore and spells, fun places you should visit and places where you will probably die, whom to marry and whom not to marry, how to make friends and destroy your enemies—plus hand-written marginalia by Finn, Jake, and Marceline.

An indispensable guide to the show fans love to watch, this side-splittingly funny love letter to Adventure Time is sure to appeal to readers of all ages. Heck yeah!

From the Back Cover:

Written by the Lord of Evil Himself, Hunson Abadeer (a.k.a. Marceline the Vampire Queen's dad), to instruct and confound the demonic citizenry of the Nightosphere, The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia is perhaps the most dangerous book in history. Although seemingly a guidebook to the Land of Ooo and its postapocalyptic inhabitants, it is in fact an amusing nightmare of literary pitfalls, bombastic brain-boggles, and ancient texts designed to drive the reader mad.

Complete with secret lore and wizard spells, fun places you should visit and places where you will probably die, advice on whom to marry and whom not to marry, and how to make friends and destroy your enemies, this volume includes hand-written marginalia by Finn, Jake, and Marceline.

Arguably the greatest encyclopaedia ever written since the beginning of the cosmos, it is also an indispensable companion to humans and demons who know what time it is: Adventure Time!

Not A "Making Of." Something Better.
By Metal Monkey
If you are looking for a book with lots of specific information about the making of Adventure Time, this is not that book. I see another reader has criticized The Adventure Time Encyclopedia for not providing behind-the-scenes trivia, show history, or interviews with the cast and creators.

While that may be a disappointment for certain AT fans, I have a very different response as a fan both of the show and of author Martin Olson, best known for the instant cult classic "Encyclopaedia of Hell" (and as the voice of Hunson Abadeer, a character seemingly reflective of Olson's cult celebrity as the evil-oid EOH author).

Rather than a research-based tell-all about Adventure Time, this book is something which could only have been written by Olson.

With so much AT information already available on the Wikia site, blogs, features and interviews on youtube, etc., it seems Pendleton Ward and company wanted to take this book to another level. So, instead of hiring someone to gather data and conduct interviews, they got Olson to bring his unique imagination and warped sense of humor to "The Adventure Time Encyclopedia," creating something truly original though difficult to categorize.

Isn't that just like them?

Equal parts fanporn, comedy, and bizarre experiment in meta-literature, Encyclopaedia of Adventure Time is for those who seek more than just a typical "Making Of" book. So, for Glob's sake, curl up with a nice cup of mallow tea and vibe into the extreme algebraicism of this utterly strange book. Of which, some parts seem to be alive. Or are a fanzine scribbled insanely by the Ice King. And all of which is hilariously littered with handwritten notes by Finn, Jake and Marceline (Also: Artwork. Beautiful, detailed, artwork by Tony Millionaire and Mahendra Singh. Please).

Even knowing Olson's previous work, TATE is not what I was expecting. Which is totally rhombus.

Beautifully designed and entertaining
By Rachel M. Helps
I was pleasantly surprised to find this encyclopedia full of new Adventure Time art. It's written from the point of view of Marceline's dad, king of the Nightosphere, with faux-written-in comments by Marceline, Finn, and Jake (I'm pretty sure multiple authors commenting on the main body makes it experimental post-modern awesome! Unfortunately they never say much). It's more than just an alphabetical listing of most of the Adventure Time characters; things like Princess Bubblegum's Travel Guide to Ooo and the Ice King Fiona and Cake Zine give it a miscellany feel.

The design is really impressive for licensed cartoon merchandise. Children will probably like all the pictures, and teens/adults can enjoy Abadeer's delightful circumlocutions, although he does get annoyingly hyper-self-aware (and the tone of his writing is inconsistent). The writing could have been a bit better, but it's still entertaining. I chuckled more than once! If you're a fan of the show you should totally buy this book! You will love it. If you're buying it for a child, just know that it assumes the reader has a large vocabulary (words like "masticating" "ninny" and "bevy" are common, which might discourage a 10-year-old. Or it might encourage them, who knows).

This Encyclopedia makes this reader happy, nay, giddy, when its contents enter range of her orbicular sight sensors (did you find that circumlocution funny or annoying? More of the same awaits you in this Encyclopedia).

Vintage Tattoos: The Book of Old-School Skin Art, by Carol Clerk

Tattoos have gone from badges of rebellion to fashion statements fully absorbed into mainstream culture. They are enjoying a renaissance, with graphic designers and artists creating specialty tattoos for a growing audience, unleashing a revival of interest in the bawdy vintage tattoo. Old school tattoos are being rediscovered (sometimes ironically, sometimes not) by a new generation. Originally embraced by rebels, sailors, and gangsters, these tattoos—broken hearts, naked girls, floral motifs, and maritime emblems—are now showing up on the fashion runway and in music videos. This book chronicles vintage motifs in thematic chapters interspersed with profiles of influential tattoo artists and their distinctive designs: Sailor Jerry Collins, Don Ed Hardy ("the Godfather of Tattoos"), Mike "Rollo Banks" Malone, Bert Grimm, Japan’s Horiyoshi III, and Shanghai’s Pinky Yun.

Review
“It seems like everyone and their mother has been inked. Carol Clerk’s new tome, Vintage Tattoos, The Book of Old-School Skin Art, tracks the evolution of old-school pin-up girl pieces…as well as classic floral, nautical, death memorials and heart designs.” ~Nylon Magazine

“We’ve read our fill about tattooed circus acts and indigenous people, but we’ll always make time for the scalawags who revolutionized tattoo art. The best chapters in Carol Clerk’s Vintage Tattoos: The Book of Old-School Skin Art detail the history of nautical and patriotic tattoos and their superstitions.” ~Inked Magazine

"The lavishly displayed wealth of brightly colored old-school flash is the heart of Vintage Tattoos, and the main reason you’ll find yourself flipping through it again and again. (Clerk's) ruminations on these designs and their cryptic meanings are enlightening." ~Playboy.com

"Vintage Tattoos is as much a tat history for tat lovers as it is for anyone into pop culture and art. Gems of tattoo lore transport us to the traveling circuses of the turn of the century (which kick-started America’s tattoo fascination) and hidden backroom parlors which popped up once state governments started banning tattooing in the 1960s. It’s a history lesson worth its ink." ~ModernTonic.com

"Vintage Tattoos...is 256 pages of art and anecdotes. Salty stories of tattoo times when shotguns, not art school degrees, hung on the walls behind the parlor counter. When tattooists traveled with the circus, not metal bands. And when the art went underground because of tattoo bans." ~Needled.com

"...an entertaining and informative title that should be in every tattoo enthusiast's book collection." ~Skin Art Magazine

“Somehow quaint and sexy at once, this opus of the epidermis will stimulate smiles, winces, and perhaps more.” ~Passport Magazine

Good Old Tattoo Flash
By Bombina
There is no shortage of tattoo books coming out these days.I liked this one because it dealt with old school flash which is my preference.A lot of interesting information and well illustrated.Quite a bit on George Burchett and his work which I found especially good.

Much More Than Expected - Books Like This Are A Must Have
By Todd Buster Paris
This is a great book. It's that simple. If you're at all interested in classic or vintage tattoos then let this be your first book on the subject, or if you have other tattoo topic books, then you need to add this to that collection.

I was interested in a book on old school or vintage tattoos. My main purpose was to learn a little bit more about Sailor Jerry Collins and his influences. I thought maybe there would be some other interesting tidbits of information on the history of what we now consider "vintage tattoos" and maybe some cool pictures - what I got was an amazing surprise.

There is so much fantastic and detailed information - none of it boring. The book takes you on an incredible journey through time, style, artists and even equipment.

Even if you don't know how to read, the pictures and old flash of these vintage tattoos are worth the price of admission ... ok, the price of the book, but you get the point.

Whether you're looking for tattoo ideas, a tattoo history lesson or want to have a unique perspective on vintage tattoos - this is a must add to your bookshelf.
