Practice makes perfect

I've heard the phrase practice makes perfect all my life. It's what my parents always told me when they forced me to practice piano between lessons. It only makes sense that it translates over into test taking as well. The problem is, I don't take tests on a daily basis. While I'm certainly grateful for that fact, when I DO have to take tests, they seem daunting and very hard overall. When this important test popped up on my radar, I knew I had to be ready. And if practice makes perfect, then I wanted to practice. At first, I wasn't sure how I was going to do that, but then I found these practice questions so I grabbed them and got to work. The practice tests included in this guide really helped me not only see what types of things I would see on the test, but also to understand some of the material better. I was able to quiz myself and see which areas needed more work and what I already knew. Once I practiced enough and got good at many of the tests, I almost started enjoying taking them. I knew once I went into the real test that while I may not be perfect, I was certainly better off then I would have been had I not had so much practice.

I returned this purchase. I was looking for a study guide for the current test which as I understand is based on the DSM 5. The book refers to the DSM 4 TR. only. I think that this book ( as well as others on Amazon) are out of date.

a must-have book for all practitioners of cultivation

This book carries the weight of a lifetime of personal cultivation. Known amidst oriental circles as probably the most influential cultivator living today, Master Nan is famous for his non-denominational/non-sectarian teachings. His wealth of knowledge can be seen clearly through the lectures that comprise this book. The reader will note that the many quotes cited in the text were given spontaneously by Master Nan without any consultation---a feat that no other modern master can possibly match. Master Nan's words make the many Buddhist and Taoist teachings of the past come to life. They become powerful reference posts and guides for those who are serious practitioners. It's truly expedient means in action! It is a pity that few of Nan's books have been translated. He is currently the best-selling author in China, as he has been for many years in Taiwan and Hong Kong. More than 15 million copies of his books have been sold in China alone.

Ever since D.T. Suzuki the great Zen scholar died no one had been able to take his place introducing the heart of Buddhist practice. Master Nan is not only a comprehensive practitioner of wide range of Buddhism, Varjrayana, Chan Buddhism, Yogacran and also Taoist Qigong practitioners. He bridged the very needed insight into the treasure house of ancient Chinses wisdom injecting a new vigor to the Beat Zen mumble jumble of talking Buddhist that is so pervalent of our time. The Book is a translation of his dharma talks during one of his intensive retreat period. In between the lines, the reader can feel the great love and compassion he had toward his students and all beings. He has tremendous humor and many time laugh with us at our own hazy moon of enlightenment nature. Like what he sayed that spiritual awaken sometime is a fine line between crazy wisdom or just plain craziness. Insanity has also a very convincing subjective self nature. This book will be like drinking a glass of cool water and a antidote to the excessive intellectual college professor Buddhism that is overflooded the earth and media. If you are a sincere practitioner then this book is for you. Also having the privilege and honor to study with some of his students, Buddhist monks, I personally experience their clarity and simplicity, they emanate their teacher's fragarence like the taste of a pure glass of spring water.

A must-read handbook for self cultivation

During the first perusal of this book, I could not believe that it was written by a contemporary Buddhist master. Master Nan's scope of understanding and wealth of knowledge far outstrips any contemporary expert in the study of Buddhism. What is characteristic of this bursar of knowledge is the accessibility of the reader to the content of the book. Although possibly diluted through translation, the genius of Professor Nan's organization of content carefully guides the reader in his/her self cultivation. Despite Master's reputation as a renown statesman in Asia, and despite the popularity of his books amongst Buddhist practitioners and the academia, this treasure house of information has been a well kept secret amongst the public.

As a psychotherapist, teacher, and author, John Welwood has been a pioneer in integrating psychological and spiritual work. All the most intractable problems in human relationships can be traced back to what I call the mood of unlove —a deep insecurity that most people harbor within themselves about being loved or lovable just for who they are. This doubt about our connection to love makes it hard to trust in ourselves, other people, life, or love itself.

The mood of unlove often shows up in the form of instant emotional reactivity to any perception of being slighted or treated badly. It's as though a huge reservoir of distrust and resentment is ready and waiting to be released—which the tiniest incident can trigger. For some couples, these emotional eruptions happen early on, blowing a budding relationship apart in their first few encounters. For others, the mood of unlove might not wreak its havoc until well into a seemingly happy marriage, when one or both partners suddenly wake up one day and realize they don't feel truly loved.

Fortunately, just as the sun is never permanently obscured by clouds, so our native capacity for love, for genuine warmth and openness, cannot be destroyed. To say that our heart is wounded means that we are lost in clouds that temporarily block our access to the sun that is always shining. Healing the love-wound, then, involves something like opening up spaces in the clouds and inviting the sun to do what it naturally wants to do: shine upon us.

Another Way of Looking at the Relationships in Your Life

I first heard John Welwood on Sounds True, a podcast about spirituality. It made a big impression on me, so much so that I listened to the program half a dozen times. Then I shared it with my family and friends. Some family and friends wondered why I wanted them to read his book, Perfect Love, Imperfect Relationships. As if my offering them this book was a suggestion that they needed therapy! So here is the point, if you are a "seeker" this book will come as a revelation, as it did for me. But, if you are a person who is not spiritual, or if you are critical of all the self help spin that our culture produces, well you know the expression, "you can lead a horse to water but..." John Welwood has put together an alternative way of viewing family relationships and creating a path towards self healing. As I studied parts of the text over and over, it became increasingly evident to me that the issues presented by the author and his ways of changing your perception about these issues was based on common sense or a kind of pragmatism that the psychologist William James would have liked. There are also Buddhist influences. I am not a Buddhist, but the direction this provides works within the framework of any faith or no faith. Anyone who struggles with their personal suffering, past or present will find some peace in this book.

What a gift this book has been to me

This book is so terrific that I don't know how to begin to do it justice -- but I'll try!

Many things I could say about it are paradoxes:

* It's gentle, and yet it encourages the reader to undertake some pretty challenging exercises.

* It acknowledges our wounds -- how our parents stuffed us up, etc. -- and yet it shows the way through that pain to the appreciation and joy waiting beyond the pain.

* It shares enough theory to provide an intellectual understanding of how the human (flawed) side of us is created, yet it also shares at a practical level that helps us to tap into our feelings and, through them, to reach the spiritual dimension (perfect love) that's the ground of our being.

* It uses everyday English rather than psychological or religious jargon.

* I believe people of diverse backgrounds could enjoy this book, whether they approach it from a secular, Christian, Buddhist or whatever other point of view.

Welwood shares details of his own challenges, e.g., in his relationship with his mother, and also case histories of clients in his practice as a psychologist. The stories provide tangible examples that illustrate relevant points. The personal anecdotes convey the impression that he isn't setting himself up as the know-it-all expert lecturing us ignorant minions, but humbly admits to living in the trenches of life himself.

This book has helped me to make a giant leap in accepting myself and having compassion towards myself, in short, loving myself. There has been a corresponding expansion in the sense of compassion I feel towards other people and therefore acceptance of them as they are.

It has reconfigured my notions of love, romance

Perhaps the most important book I have read this year. It has reconfigured my notions of love, romance, and relationship; and it has allowed me to understand my own dysfunctions in this realm in a way that is both forgiving and universal. As a practical help it provides exercises to heal the wounds of the heart and allow direct contact with the unconditional love which is the source and destination of all our yearning. The book also shines in its ability to convey its truths without jargon or specialized vocabulary, which allows it to reach a wide audience while passing on to readers the author's deep experience with both personal psychology and spiritual growth.

Sufficiently helpful bare bones guide, a bit too expensive for what you get

This book provides a very brief overview for setting up a TFS environment. While there are a couple helpful tips, especially regarding active directory user groups, this book is basically an install guide that will take you step-by-step to configure a bare bones TFS environment. However, the price of the book compared to the amount of actual useful information is hard to make this book a good value.

Fine for a Beginner

The book does what the title says it will do and covers the essentials.

The author does not go into upgrades beyond mentioning them. There are very few places doing fresh installs.

This book would be good for someone who wants to stand up a VM to play around with and learn TFS.

I am doing a 2013 to 2015 upgrade. I have done the 2010 to 2013 upgrade which included moving from a 32bit to 64bit server.

This book didn't really have anything of value in it for me, but I do think it would be good for someone new to TFS.

The dramatic ending may leave readers brimming with unanswered questions about the effects of the ball and the future of the North family. The descriptions of the undead are gross and humorous, rather than scary, making this a fun book for the younger zombie-loving set. It’s just past midnight, and my brother, Fenton, and I are pushing a wheelbarrow holding our undead grandfather, who we dug up at a cemetery a mile from our farm. There’s one of us on each handle—pushing a sort-of-dead guy is a two-kid job.

We are on a tar and gravel road, so pebbles crunch under the wheelbarrow’s wheel—maybe this will help you see it inside your head. We pass by houses and farms, some with unattended cows. Cows at night, with their dark eyes and splotchy designs, look like creatures from another planet.

Fenton and I stop pushing Grandpa Wade so we can rest.

Anyway.

It had been cloudy all day, but when I check the sky I see stars glittering above us. We live in a small farm town, so nothing blocks our view of the sky. That night, the night Fenton and I commit grave robbery for the sake of our family, it seems like the stars are packed ten deep per square foot of sky.

Awe-mazing.

“Stars,” my grandfather says, pointing at the sky with a crooked finger. He died three years ago in a car wreck, and by all rights he had given up his star-seeing privileges. But a miracle happened, and now he’s seeing stars again.

Watching Grandpa watch the stars, it hits me that I should never take anything for granted, like seeing stars fill up the sky on a warm night in May—and a hundred other things and people I love. Because one day it could all be gone, and if I’m waiting on a miracle to bring it back, I might be waiting for a very long time.

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

Get it for the map, not the "guide"!

I can't really understand the other reviews praising this map and guide. The map is a good one, yes. But the "guide" part is so highly opinionated that if you don't "groove" in the same track as the author, it's of no use. There is NOT a Thai phrase guide as indicated by another reviewer, only "Hello" and "Thanks"! There are also no monetary amounts (in any currency) attached to the pricing guide for restaurants (just a number of "$" with silly expressions like "You call this a bill" and "I got the last one"). What's expensive, or cheap, to one traveler might not be to another depending on the meaning of the symbols. Buy it for the map, but not for the guide!

This map is Groovy!

Great overview map of Bangkok. Shows the routes of the Skytrain and subways which should cover most of your traveling needs when supplemented with taxis and Tuk-tuks. During rush hour traffic you can walk faster than the taxis and Tuk-tuks in major areas. Great information on places to sleep, eat, drink and shop. Great advise for the first time visitor. Much better than the maps in all the other tour books. Also the map is laminated so it won't start tearing apart after folding it several times. The only negative is that the map is not updated every year. Some of the information is out of date.

Nice map, but still some room for improvement

the map is laminated (waterproof) and gives you the major tourist areas. I'd like to see these stick out more from the background because I needed to search for them. I like to find them without a tourist guide. Luckily I know Bangkok. If I didn't know Bangkok would be harder to find the tourist spots. It's a good map and maybe the best on Bangkok but still room for improvement. I looked it over for a few hours.

Accomplishing the impossible on time and under budget

"More than My Share of it All" is the autobiography of Clarence "Kelly" Johnson the iconic and prolific chief Engineer and designer at Lockheed Aviation from 1933-1975. He contributed to the designs of more than 40 aircraft. He is only one of two designers to have won the Collier Trophy for greatest American aerospace achievement of the year twice. (The other was Glenn Curtiss.) A companion book is "Skunk Works: A Personal History of My Years at Lockheed" which is the autobiography of Ben Rich another Collier Trophy winner. It chronicles advanced development at Lockheed from 1950 - 1990.
Kelly Johnson was an organizational genius. His "Skunk Works" based on Kelly's fourteen points for overcoming bureaucratic inefficiency using a small team of highly skilled, self-motivated individuals is recognized universally as the preferred method for time-critical advanced research. These two books describe how Kelly - and then Ben - were able to deliver cutting edge aviation technology on-time and under budget. As a former aerospace engineer I consider these books required reading for anyone contemplating a career in aerospace. I would add one other book: "Quest for Performance" by former NACA scientist Lawrence Loftin, is a comprehensive history of aviation design for the non-technical reader. I have all three of these books in my Kindle library.
Johnson's book also provides insight into Kelly the man. He took personal responsibility for the fatal accidents that are inevitable when pushing boundaries. His deliberate demeanor clashed with the flamboyant Howard Hughes with whom he collaborated in the development of the Constellation. There is one encounter where Hughes took the controls during a checkout flight and nearly killed everyone onboard including Kelly. He never flew with Hughes again.
Kelly considers the SR-71 his crowning achievement. As an engineering triumph it has no equal. The SR-71 still holds the absolute speed and altitude records for air-breathing manned airplanes. His F-104 holds the low-altitude absolute speed record. It is unlikely that these records will be broken anytime soon.
Kelly Johnson was the consummate minimalist. His clean functional designs are aesthetically pleasing - some like the F-104, Constellation and SR-71 are breathtaking. As with living sculptures such as birds and whales an airplane's shape is dictated not by the whims of stylists but by the laws of physics.

Being an aviation enthusiast, I've always been fascinated with the Skunk Works, and those who have worked there. As others have said, the book is a bit skimpy on Skunk Works details, but is an interesting look at Kelly Jonson's life at and away from his work.

The thing I'll remember most is his work ethic and ability to complete a project and produce a product for much less time and money than perhaps others in the industry could. I think that if his methods were to be applied broadly in today's manufacturing industries, the U.S. could return to being a superpower of productivity.

The legendary engineer in his own words

While nobody is going to read this book for its literary qualities, this is a book which should be read by all engineers. Like other reviewers, I wished for more detail, but Johnson's prose reflects the spare purposefulness of his designs. He takes us from his youth, through school and his employment career.
I read this book around the same time as the mythical man month, and recommend software engineers consider reading them together, as many of the ideas on building effective "Skunk Works" for developing new technology are the same.
