YOU HAVEN'T MET AUSTRALIA TILL YOU'VE MET THIS

The old hero-story, thoughtfully retold, is always nourishing to read, but Wrightson offers us more: a first-class hero-cycle that is deeply, soul-quickeningly Australian. Wirrun is a young mid-20th-century Aboriginal man advancing to apotheosis (indeed) through encounter not only with the Aboriginal peoples of the "old south land" but also with the spirits who are themselves the land's oldest dreamings. Till I met them in Wrightson (a white Australian woman) these out-breathings of Australian presence were hidden to me. If bringing them forward in fiction like this involved a measure of cultural risk (I'm waiting on a ruling on that from the Aboriginal mate I bought this copy for), I, for one, can only be grateful. Profoundly respectful of the people whose lore constitutes so much of her material, she also loves them -- and shows it by enrolling Wirrun as a first-class member of that mighty, immemorial and global company that "climbs the rugged track to hero" on behalf of all of us, Australian or not, Aboriginal or not, man and woman alike.

Born in 1944 in Klosterheide, Germany, Reinhard Schrieber graduated as an engineer for chemical technology from the University of Applied Sciences in Mannheim, Germany in 1967. He began his career at Chemische Werke Stoess in Eberbach, Germany, one of the original companies belonging to the GELITA Group, where he held several positions, becoming member of the Management Board of the GELITA Group in 1987. From 1985 to 2001 he was President of the German Gelatine Manufacturers' Association, and of the European Gelatine Manufacturers' Association (GME) from 1988 to 1997, as well as Chairman of the Regulatory and BSE Safety Committee of GME from 1997 to 2003. Reinhard Schrieber has published over 20 papers on the use of gelatine in food and pharmaceutical applications.

Herbert Gareis was born 1955 in Höchstadt, Germany, and completed his chemistry studies at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a PhD. In 1986 he started his professional career in the Photographic Department of DGF Stoess, becoming department head with technical and commercial responsibility in 1994. In 1996 Dr. Gareis was appointed head of the global Photographic Gelatine Division of the GELITA Group and, since 2004, has been a member of the Management Board of GELITA AG, responsible for Production and R&D.

Very useful reference

Most other available references are much older, as are the most common technologies in this field. This text describes the most recent developments and is filled with useful illustrations. A Radical Message for the 21st Century

Burned at the stake in Paris in 1310, Marguerite Porete might easily have been forgotten were it not for the fact that some copies of her book, "The Mirror of Simple Souls," escaped the flames intended to extirpate the written record of her heresy. Seven-hundred years later, the work remains a spiritual and poetic masterpiece, with much to say to our own age.

At a time when churches are suffering a decline in membership and financial support, when many former churchgoers are looking for non-traditional ways to satisfy their spiritual needs, when rapid change and uncertainty encourage escape through self-absorption and material gratification, Marguerite offers an alternate path, but it is not one that New Age advocates, self-realization sects, or the burgeoning ranks of enthusiastic evangelicals are likely to find congenial.

Annihilation of will and the melting into the “marrow of divine Love” is the terminus of a path described in the book. Such a soul is “scorched through mortification and burned through the ardor of the fire of charity, and her ashes are thrown into the open sea through the nothingness of will.”

Such a soul no longer needs to seek God through penitence, through sacraments, through the church, or through the practice of virtues, for it has “dissolved in Him.” Unencumbered with self, Love “nourishes and sustains those who pledge faithful loyalty to her, for she is satisfying and deep and a richly flowing sea.” Such a soul does not feel joy because she is joy itself, flowing out of the Divinity. The Rumi of Christianity-Divinely Inspired

Unique amongst Christian mystical writings and I say that having read a lot of them. Cloud of unknowing to Theresa of Avilla. This book was condemned by the French Inquisition as being heretical. Just like Joan of Arc, Marguerite Porete was asked to recant. When she refused to respond to her inquisitors, she was condemned to death. On 1 June 1310 she was burned at the stake in Paris for her crime of direct knowing. She said things like ;
"Thus it is better that the Soul be in the sweet country of understanding-nothing" ... (p. 142)
"(God) is incomprehensible except by Himself". (p. 84)
"I have only as much being as (God) is able to be of Himself in me". (pp. 174-175)
Margerete Porrete is much more purely gnostic in her message which is why the Inquisition burned all of her writings. Strangely this one book survived to express in an exquisite simplicity the path to god through meditation and devotion. SHe does this brilliantly, explaining her teaching through writing a dialogue between intellectual reason (the churches way of understanding), love , and the soul. She sometimes divides the dialogue further between other parts, but the way she presents it is amazingly more lucid than many other christian mystics.
THis book is for anyone who has a serious meditation practice and combines this with thier love of God. It is not an intellectual regurgitation of a young woman trying to be a spiritual writer. She is divinely inspired by her own gnosis of what is the truth and of what is love through entering the stillness and silence of the mind. She does this through deep surrender to Christ. This love seeks to motivate others to practice more than intellectual submission, this love pours a method out onto these pages, her method to go back into absorption with GOD. This same love eventually brought her to the same sacrifices as other teachers before her. I believe the Margerite Porette was simply trying to teach others in a simple way how to experience God directly through her method. And there is clearly a method in here for those that practice meditation (a method of concentration to silence the mind-surrender the self will). Thus the book is called the Mirror of simple souls.
It is a shame that so may others who review this book reduce it to a piece of invented, intellectual literature, really throwing Marguerite's truth and method back into the ashes. A shame as she was burned for her faith in what she was writing, not for being a scholar.
If you love the Philokalia, or Rumi or Meister Eckhart; or you just simply love GOD and wish to deepen your devotional meditation practice this book is for you.

A reliable edition

This is virtually the only available Modern English edition of originally Old French 'The Mirror of Simple Souls', so it is fortunate not only that it is part of the Classics of Western Spirituality Series but also that it rises to the exceptional level of scholarly excellence that marks the rest of the series while still presenting an accessible text. Marguerite's text is challenging no matter what language, but the introduction and footnotes will answer most questions of any level. Babinsky's edition is, and will be for some time, the sole point of access to Margeurite's work by students, scholars, the devout and lay alike.

Daniel J. Levitin, PhD, is Dean of Social Sciences at the Minerva Schools at KGI in San Francisco and a faculty member at the Center for Executive Education in the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. Parts of this book are very well done and cover ...

Parts of this book are very well done and cover important concepts. However, a book about lying with numbers should not have math errors and this book has several. The author shows a graph with a bar that is six times higher than another and states that it is 600% larger (rather than the correct 500%) and another example illustrates that a correlation coefficient of 0.91 means that the independent variable explains 91% of the dependent variable (rather than the correct 81%). Ordinarily not criminal offenses, but in a book on this subject matter these are inexcusable mistakes.

One of a group of books, this has the best chart to learn your deficiency pattern

This, Mood Cure and Balance Your Brain, Balance Your Life, all came out around the same time. They repeated and upleveled the amino acid discussion from the mega-vitamins days of the 1980s.

Arnold Fox's books DLPA, from the 1980s should also part of this group of books. DLPA > endorphins > pain relief This is the only stand-alone book on DLPA and goes into it far more than any of the above books. DLPA for arthritis and CFS, FM, etc.

Braverman's book, this one, has possibly the most usable chart: the deficiency characteristics chart. This still looks like the best place to start. ALL three books are helpful once you know what your deficiency pattern is. All of them can help you grok which aminos to take as raw materials building blocks. NONE of the books have the other half of the problems here to; which is, UNwillingness to make neurotransmitters (NTs) and endorphins out of amino acids while you sleep. This topic is so new there is no book yet. Solutions depend on some grasp of the fractal nature of our psyche. Initial articles are up at Healing Toolbox org.

Revolutionary book in the field of neuroscience

My neurologist suggested that I read this book to better understand my brain injury and the effects. It reads easy and explains the brain and how it works in a very simplistic fashion that will educate you on how the neurons in your brain fire and the different types of brains we have. I will never look at people and their personalities the same way again after reading this book and now understand why I am the way that I am.

The negative aspect to this book is some misinformation regarding diet, fats and the fact that the author believes psychiatric drugs are ok to take. However, this book was very helpful in regards to learning how neurotransmitters impact our mental and physical health.

Great book for a beginner

This book was very easy to read and understand. Shortly after reading the book, I knew all I needed to start cutting my family and friends' hair. The only drawback was that the book didn't include how to cut hair that is "folically challenged" (i.e., not much on top)which I could have used a few pointers on for a family member. Regardless, I was able to modify the instructions in the book myself and give him a great haircut.
I would also recommend getting the companion video that shows all of the styles from the book being done by hair professionals.

Good info, Poor Illustrations

The info is good. Im a cosmetology student, so I can actually understand the content. The pictures are not very good. I would like to see color pictures, w/maybe a Manikin demonstration on haircuts, something other than the simple drawings provided.

A Great Place to Start

I feel like this book gave me more professional training than a lot of the other books that I have read (This book has been used in a lot of cosmetology schools) I had already watched the video about 4 times before I bought the book. I don't know if the book would be confusing if you hadn't watched the video beforehand. I feel that between the book and the video this was a great place for me to start learning haircutting! The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I feel it could have given us a lot more information on each page - the book didn't have to be that basic!
