Excerpt from Things Seen

In the Rue Saint-Florentin there are a palace and a sewer.

The palace, which is of a rich, handsome, and gloomy style of architecture, was long called Hotel de l'lnfantado; nowadays may be seen on the frontal of its principal doorway Hotel Talleyrand. During the forty years that he resided in this street, the last tenant of this palace never, perhaps, cast his eyes upon this sewer.

He was a strange, redoubtable, and important personage ; his name was Charles Maurice de Périgord ; he was of noble descent, like Machiavelli, a priest like Gondi, unfrocked like Fouché, witty like Voltaire, and lame like the devil. It might be averred that everything in him was lame like himself, - the nobility which he had placed at the service of the Republic, the priesthood which he had dragged through the parade-ground, then cast into the gutter, the marriage which he had broken off through a score of exposures and a voluntary separation, the understanding which he disgraced by acts of baseness.

This man, nevertheless, had grandeur ; the splendours of the two regimes were united in him: he was Prince de Vaux in the Kingdom of France, and a Prince of the French Empire.

About the Author
The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo s literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Hugo As Observer of His Times
By reading man
Given the length of CHOSES VUES, a well-chosen and well-translated selection like this in English is a boon.

Of course, anyone who reads Hugo had better enjoy very long books, LES MISERABLES being 1,300 pages, and most of his other novels longish. However, nobody except a scholar or biographer needs to go through the whole of CHOSES VUES, because Hugo's opinions of then current events written in plain prose are interesting without being enthralling. Joanna Richardson, in her introduction to this selection, compares Hugo's journal with that of the Goncourts and justly says that the interest of the latter as a chronicle is much greater.

Outside France, Hugo is no longer living literature, though the recent translations of LES MISERABLES may revive at least that great and garrulous work. However, he deserves to be read through, his novels and as much of the poetry as non-Francophones can digest, because he was a major figure in his time and, as Graham Robb says in his extraordinary biography, is worth wallowing in.

I recommend all of his novels, especially those he wrote in exile, all of which are now available in excellent modern translations by James Hogarth, as well as either the Penguin or Oxford translation of NOTRE DAME DE PARIS. Avoid the older English translations which are wretchedly done. Hugo's prose is fueled by an unusual imagination as well as superlative verbal means, and even if he overwrites, digresses, and blathers on at points, a receptive modern reader will want to keep turning the pages to see where he goes next.
