Drawing on a wealth of expertise from an international team of contributors, the second edition of International Relations Theories presents a diverse selection of theoretical positions.
Arguing that theory is central to explaining the dynamics of world politics, editors Tim Dunne, Milja Kurki, and Steve Smith cover a wide variety of theoretical positions--from the historically dominant traditions to powerful critical voices since the 1980s. The editors have brought together a team of international contributors, each specializing in a different theory. The contributors explain the theoretical background to their positions before showing how and why their theories matter. The book opens up space for analysis and debate, allowing students to decide which theories they find most useful in explaining and understanding international relations.

Perfect IR theory overview for doctoral students
By Dr.U
This would definitely not be my choice of textbook for undergraduates. However, for graduate students that need an overview of the major theories of IR - this is one of the best books I've seen to date. Each chapter is written by a prominent academic and focuses on a one of the major theories. Moreover, the chapters name all of the major theorists and their contributions, as well as giving an in-depth look at one major book or article and a case study for each theory. The first two chapters also talk about the great debates in the field and give a general overview of what theory is (focus on normative). The concluding chapter looks to the future of the discipline. In sum, this book is perfect for a doctoral student that needs a good balance between an overview and some specifics - as in if you are reviewing for comprehensive exams or taking an intro to IR theory course.

Excellent introduction to International Relations.
By keeex
When I first bought this book, I read reviews about it being too technical and not catering to the needs of the typical undergraduate (gearing mainly towards post-grads). I completely disagree. This book should be one of the first books any International Relations student reads, as it not only provides an in-depth discussion of major theories in IR, but also discusses the wider place of theory in IR and social sciences more generally--a foundation without which any reading of global politics would be incomplete. The questions at the end of each chapter are very thought provoking, and the chapters are clear yet thorough.
This book answered a lot of questions for me, both with regards to the discipline of IR and the way the world works more generally. While many other introductory textbooks have a hard time structuring their text to suit someone brand new to thinking about world politics (as in Understanding IR--the focus is too historical), this one actually shows the progression of thought in the discipline and enables and guides the reader in asking and answering the very same questions (and more) that the great thinkers of the discipline have. The references made are also very useful and important.
Overall, great book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (especially for IR undergraduate students, but if you are smart enough to read this whilst even younger, good for you). This book will help you figure out your values and understand others', something everyone in this age should aim to do.
Oooh--one more thought. Although I don't think I'd ever have touched this book had I not been studying the subject, I think it is very, very useful for those who want to understand the way the world works more generally. (I have very recently read Noam Chomsky's How the World Works (Real Story (Soft Skull Press))), and was immediately swept away with his so-called "radical" ideas. Books like IR Theories, however, have allowed me to take a step back from such works, and understand that there are many different "lenses" through which to look at world politics, and that how I choose my lens is a decision that I alone can and should make, depending on my own set of values.

Deep Examination of IR Theories
By Chief H
Qualitatively a good book. I used it and may very well not sell it back. A very good reference for future papers and references in IR.
